This is a very interesting Carol written by a Jesuit monk in Québec for the native American Huron
people in the mid 1500's. It told the Christmas story in native imagery.

It was completely forgotten in the European tradition and collected from the Huron in the early 20th century.

The words have been rewritten to tell THAT story, rather than the Christian one.
Here are the words:

‘Twas in the moon of wintertime when all the geese had fled
That Mighty Gitchie Manitou sent angel choirs instead.
Before their light the stars grew dim and ancient hunters heard the hymn.
A new day will be born, a new day is born, In Excelsis Gloria

One Christmas day in Canada, a long, long time ago Jean de Brebeuf wrote this song to let the Huron know.
An ancient story he held dear, Now let us sing it loud and clear:
A new day will be born, a new day is born, In Excelsis Gloria

Though it‘s true this ancient song does bear the Frenchman’s name,
It was the Huron and their faith that kept alive it’s flame.
With respect our diff’ring faiths shall unite us free from hate
Then a new day will be born, a new day will be born, In Excelsis Gloria

REPEAT FIRST VERSE
