En Nombre is a song from the black communities of coastal Peru.
It often announces the beginning of the Hatajo - a dance and procession
through the streets of town much as we go carolling. Hatajos de Negritos
is a collective dance accompanied by violin and rattles. In between verses
the "zapateo" or fancy footwork dancing takes place.

Listen to a recording of this song by Peruvian children from the recent CD
compiled by the great Peruvian singer Susanna Baca.

Here are the words and music for the song:

En Nombre - a traditional Hatajo from Southern Coastal Peru

In the name of all we treasure
Let the yule season now begin.
For our families, fathers, mothers,
A brand New Year is born again.

En nombre de Dios comienza
Per que es bueno comenzar.
En el nombre de Maria
