Acadia (Acadie in French) was founded by the French in 1606. In that year the Acadian settlement, Port Royale became, the first permanent settlement in North America. Acadia included what is now Nova Scotia, Canada. Acadia was a pawn in the 17th century power struggle between England and France. It changed hands between them many times over the next 100 years. The Treaty of Utrecht (1713) put Acadia permanenetly under English control. The French-Acadian people remained its main residents until 1755.
